Seals

The California Sea Lions have four flippers.   The Sea Lion have visible ear flaps.  The rear flippers point backwards.  They have strong fore flippers to help propel them through the water at speeds up to 20 miles per hour.  The male length of the sea lion is about 7 feet.

The male has a pronounced crest, a tapering muzzle and a smooth, torpedo-shaped body.
California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) - Monterey, California, coast of California, the Galapagos Island and coast of Japan.  The coat is brown with some lighter areas.  This common sea lion lives in large groups.
The whiskers act as antennae to detect possible prey.  When diving in the water, a Sea Lion's nostrils automatically close and their eyes are protected by a thin transparent film so allowing them to see underwater.
When underwater, oxygen is conserved by slowing the blood circulation and pumping only to vital organs.  This allows a Sea Lion to remain underwater for up to 20 minutes at one time.
They can be very vocal.
Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) - Antarctic waters, California coast.  This is the largest of the pinniped carnivores.  The male has a trunk like nose, which inflates during courtship display.  The female seal has a fleshy, blunt nose instead of a proboscis.  They have a silver-gray coat.
