Jaguar (Panthera onca) - Southern United
States, Central and Northern South America. The Jaguar is the only
"BIG CAT" in North or South America. The beige to reddish
coat has rosettes, roundish markings with a small black dot in the
middle with a white belly. These rosettes are different in each
jaguar like our fingerprints are individual to each person. The strong legs are short and muscular.
This Black Jaguar has a melanism which is an
excessive amount of dark pigment in their fur. The spots are still
visible in the
fur. There are no "panthers". Instead, the black
cat can either be a Jaguar, a Leopard or a Mountain Lion (cougars or
pumas). The word "panther" probably came from the Latin
name "panthera onca".
